I Tried Installing The Elgato iPad Capture App on my Mac
Installing iPad Apps on to Mac computers, or iPadOS apps onto MacOS, should be straight forward enough. However, this can only happen when the manufacturer or app developer allows that cross-platform/hardware installation function. Unfortunately, Elgato do not allow their Capture app for iPad to be installed on Mac.
This does not mean to say that the Elgato Capture app is not compatible with Macs, it just means that, for whatever reason, Elgato do not want you to install the iPad Capture app on Mac. Don’t forget, when Apple released their first Apple Silicon computers back in November 2020, one of which being the Mac Mini M1. They made a point of the compatibility between the apps for iOS and iPadOS with MacOS. This was because with the introduction of Apple Silicon, Apple had a uniformed hardware architecture between their Apple portable devices and their Apple Mac devices. With that uniformed hardware processing architecture being ARM RISC processors, or SoC, System on Chip.
So, whether you are using an iPhone or iPad with an A series processor or SoC, System on Chip. Or using an M series processor/SoC in an Apple Silicon Mac laptop, such as a MacBook Pro or Apple Silicon Mac desktop such as the Mac Studio, Mac Mini or iMac. The one thing that all these Apple portable devices and Mac computers now have in common, is that they all use ARM RISC based processors or SoCs
Now that all Apple devices are using essentially the same ARM processing architecture and also compatible operating systems in iOS, iPadOS and MacOS. This also means cross-platform/device compatibility with the software and apps. Which, again, was one of the big points that Apple announced with the release of Apple Silicon for Mac.
So, given that Elgato have not bothered to give Apple Silicon Mac users any capture software for their Elgato USB HDMI video game capture cards, such as the 4K X and the HD60 X etc. Why don’t they at least allow the use of the Elgato Capture app for iPad to be used on Apple Silicon Macs? It almost feels like Elgato’s product support for Mac is an afterthought, or maybe something that the begrudging do just so they can market themselves as multi-platform/hardware peripherals manufacturer who make Mac compatible hardware and peripherals.
I haven’t got a clue why Elgato don’t allow for the Elgato Capture app for iPad to be installed on Mac but it is super frustrating that they don’t. So if anyone out there knows why they don’t, please let me know in the comments. Or If anyone from Elgato comes across this video, then please get in touch with me and let me know why.
Anyway. For more really odd behaviour by Elgato, such as their release of a product for Apple Silicon Macs that’s not fully compatible with Macs, as in, the Elgato 4K X USB-C HDMI 2.1 game capture card. Which has been released with a serious issue that Elgato do not inform Apple Silicon users of, which is that this 10Gbps capture card only operates at 5Gbps on Apple Silicon Macs, and therefore can’t record all the HDMI frame rates and resolutions that Elgato advertise. Then checkout my Elgato 4K X playlist. This playlist also has workflow videos in it and examples of picture quality for game captures. I will also be adding to this playlist over time with more uses for the 4K X and other Elgato products https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLleKChtNUwZTxzhTWi-JG_UGhEQcb00pC
