Half-Life 2 Linux Beta
How to record Games on Steam using FFmpeg on Linux
I now use simplescreenrecorder which works amazingly and can be found here http://www.maartenbaert.be
ensure you have the following install:
# PulseAudio Volume Control
# FFmpeg
# xwininfo
# video editing software to bring it all together (I used Openshot for the first time on this video which worked really well)
NOte these instruction are great if you are like me with low end or old hardware as I avoid encoding during recording and deal with it later in editing
step 1:
start your game in windowed mode and ensure it is on a low resolution (smaller screen space = better FPS)
step 2: open 3 terminals. one for video, one for game audio and one for microphone.
step 3:
in the terminal you are using for video type xwininfo and click on you game window and in the terminal output find the line looking like this "-geometry 1079x726+156+263"
step 4:
using the output from xwininfo complete the command below make note this command records to screen with absolutely no compression so expect files in the GigaBytes
ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 24 -s [first number]x[second number] -i :0.0+[third number],[four number] -vcodec huffyuv -sameq videofilename.avi
example using step 3's xwininfo output would look like this
ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 24 -s 1079x726 -i :0.0+156,263 -vcodec huffyuv -sameq videofilename.avi
step 5:
in the other 2 terminals place this command (ensure you have a different filename for each)
ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -ar 44100 -i pulse audiofilename.flac
then in PulseAudio Volume Control ensure each FFmpeg task in the Recording tab in pointing to 1) the speaker output and 2) the microphone
Notes
---------
Don't worry about getting all 3 FFmpeg commands running at the same time as you can easily sync them up on your favourite editing software. Openshot was used in this video for editing which worked really well and it has a preset profile for youtube videos when your ready to output you final video
