I was thinking, since I didn't buy a VR headset, I should have plenty of cash to buy a new PC instead, so I guess a used xeon from aliexpress should do the trick...

Ok, I lied, I did actually get a new VR headset, but to be honest, it's more like a fancier HMD for my phone. Samsung GearVR (2nd gen) for 1/10 the cost of the cheapest dedicated 6dof headset... And I can do what both Vive/Index and Oculus/WMR can't do. True wireless AND base station tracking via 4 PS Eye usb webcams. And thanks to Gear VR I am no longer having a problem with yaw drift, only need to re-center once when starting the game.

On my old 18$ xeon the game was 90% playable but I noticed the 6dof tracking was more responsive in Steam VR home, so I got the 150$ xeon, now it's always 60fps (including 6dof tracking) and I've enabled smooth locomotion, the only thing that is still choppy is the SteamVR spectator preview window which I am recording in this video of course.

Seems like I would need a better GPU for future games like Cyberpunk 2077 because most games at my desktop resolution (11520x2160) I'm playing on very low and getting 40ish FPS, and in VR the GPU usage is still always 100% due to riftcat using GPU for encoding, plus I'm using spectator view and also sometimes recording the screen using Geforce Now. I'm not expecting the 3080 to be any cheaper so maybe looking into AMD's next gen card like RX 6700xt or 6800.

Still working on the CPU overclock, it should be always stuck on 4.6ghz but seems the turbo boost duration window is too low or something.

Stay tuned for Part 2!
