2Halo: Combat Evolved (commonly known as Halo or Halo: CE) is a first-person shooter developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The first part of the Halo series, which was released at the same time as the American debut of the Xbox, and later became the "pull title" of the platform. On November 9, 2005, it was announced that more than five million copies of the game had been sold, and in 2003, the game became available on Windows and Mac OS X platforms, and its story was continued by numerous novels and comic books. In December 2007, it became available for download on Xbox 360 consoles as part of the Xbox Original games.
The story of Halo takes place in the 26th century, its protagonist is Master Chief, a super soldier armed with special developments. He is assisted by Cortana, an artificial intelligence that is connected to his neural network. The player fights against the Covenant, an alliance of extraterrestrial beings that aims to destroy humans, the location is the artificial celestial body that also gives the title of the game.
The game received many accolades from critics and players, the Xbox version has a score of 97 on Metacritic, with positive reviews mainly for the story and the artificial intelligence of the opponents. The game was followed by two sequels, Halo 2 (2004) and Halo 3 (2007), in 2009 the series was expanded with a spin-off titled Halo 3: ODST, and in 2010, the game's prequel Halo: Reach was released. For the tenth anniversary of the release of Halo: Combat Evolved, a renewed version of the game was released, which bore the title Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. The fourth part, which is being worked on by 343 Industries instead of Bungie, was released in the fall of 2012.
Gameplay
Halo: Combat Evolved is a first-person shooter, so the player fights in the 3D environment while seeing the events through the eyes of the main character.[1] In the game, it is possible to use human and Covenant vehicles, depending on their type, the repertoire includes tanks, all-terrain vehicles, as well as the special flying and hovercraft of the aliens. When entering the vehicles, the camera position of the driver and the weapon operator changes to the external view, while the internal view remains for the passengers.[2] The interesting thing about the game is that the human vehicles are not damaged, and if they overturn, they can be used again after a simple button press.
The player-controlled character is equipped with a special energy shield that absorbs hits to a certain extent. However, if the player is depleted due to a lot of damage, then the player becomes quite vulnerable, because the number of notches directly indicating his health begins to decrease due to the hits received in this case; if they run out, then Master Chief dies.[3] If the main hero is not hit for a certain amount of time, the shield will automatically recharge. Displays of these values can be seen in the upper right corner of the screen, while the amount of ammunition and grenades is located in the upper left corner.[4] At the time of the game's release, the option of a rechargeable shield was unique in the genre, because previously the player could only rely on the healing packs and armor that could be picked up. Despite this, medical kits have not completely disappeared from the game, but their importance has greatly decreased.
Halo's arsenal of weapons typically consists of futuristic weapons. Critics praised this part of the game, as each device's properties make it useful in different situations, so the player should consider which one they want to take with them.[5] The Covenant's plasma weapons overheat due to continuous firing, and they only have a predetermined amount of energy capacity, after which it is no longer possible to refill the weapon. On the other hand, the regular weapons of the soldiers of the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) use traditional ammunition, so overheating is not a threat to these devices either, but at the same time, the magazines must be regularly refilled for further firing. Unlike previous FPS games, the protagonist here can only carry two weapons at the same time, which also encourages the player to be tactical.[6]
Another difference is that throwing grenades and melee attacks can also be used with the current weapon, it is not necessary to switch weapons for them.[4] By striking with weapons in this way, opponents can be eliminated without drawing the attention of their companions to the player.[7] Master Chief can carry four shrapnel grenades and four plasma grenades at the same time.[8] The special feature of the latter is that the time between its release and the explosion is slightly longer than in the case of a shrapnel grenade, and it sticks to whatever it touches first, be it a vehicle or an opponent.[9][10]
