Or, at least a future a bit brighter and a tad less grimdark, as this game is definitely rocking the dark fantasy fallen world feel. Not complaining; I love it! This dark world NEEDS ME! Be the Spark in the Dark!
A focus in Spark in the Dark is on the preservation of light, and staying in the light, as well as the avoidance of the curse in the dark, which begins to trigger if you spend too long absent the warding light. Makes sense, dark curses like to chill with dark monsters in dark lairs, so your light bringing spark-ie presence offends them!
You’re in their home! Who knows, maybe the curse is some sort of magical home defense intruder deterrent system, like bright lights or a loud siren going off when someone tries to bust into your home.
But these are creatures of darkness, so they turn on their dark lights, and let loose their 8 legged dogs of war upon your interloper 🍑! Beware ‘hero’!
Gameplay wise: Think a top down Dark Souls, rendered in a delicious top down, Isometric style, like Diablo, or Grim Dawn, or Baldur’s Gate, but with more immersive Action combat.
Plus there are 3 difficulty settings, so you’re not stuck on Dark Souls lvl difficulty if you’re not craving it. Spark in the Dark gives you the dark you order, not the dark you didn’t!
Not everyone wants their Dungeon Delving coffee strong and black, some like it mixed with a bit of mixer or cream. Get what you order cream craver!
Spark in the Dark also has 4 different characters to choose, and they all have different abilities, different stats, and feel different to play as you make your way through the dark dungeon, using your chosen character strengths as you see fit.
The Blacksmith is really strong, focused on hammers, and can repair gear. He starts with a big, 2 handed hammer, so bring the hammer down on all who oppose the big man!
The Warrior is good with shields and heavy armor, so blade and board is the combat style here, standing near tow to tow with your foe, managing your stamina, raising your shield at the right moment to absorb the blow, and then cutting them down.
The Hunter can set, disarm, and create traps, and cut poisonous glands out of the creeping monsters you kill, enabling nasty options if you can find a vial to contain the recovered poisons.
The Thief specializes in daggers, duel wielding them as they sneak around, picking locks, and brutally shanking the monsters in the dark. Sneak Attack! Brutally effective when done from the back! 😊
At first glance, Spark in the Dark reminded me of Exanima, but the combat is far more approachable, with wasd movement, a stamina system that fuels your sprint, dash, block, and grants power to your attacks.
Plus, like Exanima it has skills increasing organically via use, Skyrim style, so if you like Real Time Dungeon Crawlers, and either find Exanima too different, or like variety in your low fantasy dungeon delving romps, than Spark in the Dark could be just the game for you.
Note: This is the free demo to Spark in the Dark, and the devs update the game often. Definitely add this game to your wishlist if it interests you at all, as it really helps the devs out.
