Handheld Fighting Games of 95/99 - Virtua Fighter Animation
The Game Gear version of Virtua Fighter Animation, released in 1996, is a 2D fighting game based on the Virtua Fighter anime series. For the games Japanese release it was released under the title Virtua Fighter Mini. While based on the Anime this video game adaption does omit several characters from the Anime series with Jeffry McWild, Shun Di and Lion Rafale all missing for the games roster.
Developed by Aspect Co., Ltd. and published by SEGA, it offers Story Mode—where players follow the anime’s plot with animated cutscenes—and Versus Mode, allowing battles against the CPU or another player.
This version features three viewing modes: Normal (smaller sprites), Large (larger sprites), and Real-Time (which mimics the zooming effect from other Virtua Fighter games). The gameplay includes punches, kicks, jumps, special moves, and a unique block function using the START button, which was not available in the Master System version. Matches follow a best-of-three round format, with rounds lost through knockout, ring-out, or time expiration.
Notable playable characters include Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, Jacky Bryant, Wolf Hawkfield, Kage-Maru, Sarah Bryant, Lau Chan, and final boss Dural. In two-player mode, Kage-Maru is removed from selection. The game also features an extended intro with anime-style cutscenes. In addition to this handheld release, Virtua Fighter Animation would also release for the Sega Master System. I have also found a couple of sites that suggest a Sega Genesis version was to be released in 1997 however i have not been able to confirm this. #gaming #videogames #fightinggames
