King of Fighters R-1 is a handheld adaptation of The King of Fighters '97, released for the Neo Geo Pocket on October 28, 1998. Featuring chibi-style (SD) character designs, the game retains key gameplay mechanics from its arcade counterpart, including the Advanced and Extra battle modes, along with faithful recreations of the original fight stages.

The game follows the KOF '97 storyline, centering on the New Faces Team (Yashiro, Shermie, and Chris) as they attempt to awaken Orochi. Players can also battle against Orochi versions of Iori Yagami and Leona Heidern.
