Have you ever thought about the uniqueness of the DO 335 B2 aircraft.
And asked, Why Didn't Engineers Prioritize Weight & Energy Efficiency?
This was an aircraft that was the result of an extreme compromise: sacrificing efficiency for high performance. The design was not a technical error, but rather a reaction to tactical needs.
The Do 335 was designed as a fast interceptor, fast bomber, and fighter-bomber in one platform. Dornier wanted to create an aircraft that:
Was faster than all Allied aircraft, including the P-51 Mustang and Spitfire Mk XIV.
Was able to escape from dogfights or chase bombers at incredible speeds (the Do 335 B-2's top speed was ~770 km/h — the fastest in the piston-engine class).
Was less aerodynamic drag than traditional twin-engine aircraft (with engines on the wings), through a tandem design.
Was incredibly high speed (faster than the P-51, Mosquito, and even early jets like the early Gloster Meteor).
The rear engine provided redundancy — if one engine failed, it could still return home.
Internal bomb bay & high weight did not affect speed much due to streamlined aerodynamic design.
However:
Fuel guzzler.
Very heavy for a single-seat aircraft.
Limited range if carrying bombs & using high speed continuously.
High maintenance complexity.
So, Was the Do 335 a Failure?
Not useless, but not a long-term solution either.

Its advantages were very niche — only useful in "hit and run" tactics or fast interceptions.
