It seems you have to memorize which enemies to kill in order to increase your timer. You run out of time very quickly. Enemies are also placed right in your way and you have to have the stage layout memorized it seems. Its easy to end up on the wrong side. Jumping is set to rapid fire even though you jump with the Up direction.
