Heiankyo Alien (平安京エイリアン), known as Digger in North America, is a maze video game created by the University of Tokyo's Theoretical Science Group in 1979 (one year before Pac-Man).
In this game you play one shovel wielding hero (35 years before Shovel Knight) in his desperate fight against an invading army of aliens (one year after Space Invaders). Nintendo's 1990 Game Boy port of the game includes two modes - Old, which is very closer to the original version of the game and New, a visually and mechanically revised version.

Aside from walking around you have two abilities. Dig holes and fill holes. Your goal is to dig a hole to its maximum size, hope an alien falls into it and then fill the hole with the alien inside, burying it. You can not cross your own holes, aliens will fill up holes that are not full size when passing over them and aliens will free other aliens stuck in holes, if they reach them before you can bury them completely.

On the Old side of the game, the game is, as far as I am aware, endless and each map is randomized each time. The amount of enemies you encounter per stage will grow exponentially as you move forward. The first stage has 3, the second 4, the third resets to 3, 4, 5, reset to 3, 4, 5, 6, reset to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, reset to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 at stage 20 and likely keeps continuing as such until the game becomes unplayable - unless I am wrong and it actually has a natural end. If anyone knows, I'd love to know! Each stage also has an invisible timer and if you can't win by the time this timer runs out, a new wave of enemies will spawn in and instantly eat you alive. The game starts out slow, but with each level, the speed of the game increases, so it somehow becomes more fun to play the further you get.

Finally, two notes about this video moreso than the game itself.
1) Old side does not have any music, so I put in an 8-bit remix of Heian Alien from Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object (30 years after) by BunkoJarvinen. You can find the remix here:

2) Old side requires insane amounts of RNG to work out, so I will confess that I put a save state between each stage to make this video possible. I still beat every stage I beat legitimately, but I did not do so without trying some of them over and over again, until I found a good strategy. If you are for some reason interested in the full unedited playthrough with all the retries, that can be found here:
