Okay,

So this one was a recommendation from a Youtube viewer of mine, brought it to my attention that it was going to be coming out. Found it for the PS5 and as far as Hellboy titles go, this is actually pretty good. Now it plays like a rogue-lite in the sense that you can kit Hell Boy out with upgrades for the level you are currently in and will lose those upgrades if you die or progress to the next level. It's gameplay functions like a brawler, almost beat-em-up type gameplay. Each area segment is like an arena that allows you to fight enemies, there are smaller enemies that chase you around and they are subservient to a main enemy you have to fight to permanently kill them. You have a choice of several weapons to bring in alongside your fists.

The art style, is an almost 2.5 comic-book style, matching very closely to the comics themselves and when standing still it's hard to tell that you're playing a game.

The combat of the game is very fun, and each hit has weight to it and feels very satisfying. Especially when landing special attacks or counters.

The Story: The Web of Wyrd basically is a story of an alternate dimension that you have access to while tracking down a missing agent. As the game progresses you move through each level, encountering new enemies and acquiring artifacts.

With all these positives in mind I'm not particularly a fan of rogue-lite games, the sadomasochistic nature of these games often doesn't have me coming back again and again. This one however seems quite tolerable in that regard, not piling on too much difficulty too soon and letting you actually adjust to how the game works.

My first impression was initially skeptical but I dropped 2 hours into this and didn't even feel that time fly by.

It has some impressive voice talent, at least for the main character as the now-late Lance Reddick voices the Big Red Man himself. Couldn't be happier with that reveal too.

So let's get down to business, what do I like about this one:

The art style is fun, the gameplay is fun and satisfying especially when you land special attacks, Voice talent, Approachable learning curve, It's a game set in the Hell Boy universe, The story is mysterious and engrossing.

What I don't like:

There is an issue I have with visible framerate drop on character movements it feels intentional but is offputting at least for me, The rogue-lite elements of the game are not fun to me,

Overall, I am definitely leaning into positivity on this one, it's the type of game I could definitely play to completion and thoroughly enjoy though I don't believe I would return to it after, the collector's edition I got actually came with art book which was neat.

I would have to rate this an 8 out of 10, it has so much going for it and feels like a Hell Boy game in all the right ways. -- Watch live at   / pidera_74
