It's not often that a game comes out which pushes unique ideas on multiple fronts. I have been following this game for quite a while and I was fortunate enough to have an early look at the demo. It is fantastic to see a game which honors the classic FPS lineage but takes a completely new direction. And now the demo has been released publicly for everyone to play!
Hellscreen has a unique visual style, bit-crunched sound, rear view mirror, and mario-64-like progression. It finds unique ways to use each aspect to feed into gameplay and each other. At its heart is retro FPS, but it blazes its own trail. It would take pages of notes to explain why all these ideas work so well together, so instead I will let the video speak for itself.
There is definitely more weapons, enemies, and levels planned. I hope to see more distinct weapons, perhaps a laser or a grenade launcher. A laser will be more precise but weaker than the double shotgun, making it better for larger distances. Then for a grenade launcher, imagine fun in dropping grenades behind you as you run from a horde? I can imagine new enemies with bullet-hell like projectile patterns being fun too.
My friends have started to predict which games I would like and now call them "morpher games." This is definitely one of them and I am happy to discuss it more in the comments!
