Rather than fight with the awkward / concealed / trapping style mounting plate that the fan comes with, I instead just place a separate plate on to the fan plate with "wings" out the side to permit easier mounting in the future.

With the design itself, we drop the notion of integrating with the desk and instead just move to make the filter+fan+canister assembly a self-contained construction and merely attach the finished product to a fixed surface ( wall ) using the mounting plate.

The filter box assembly that sits on top of the fan is going to be a "base" on which we can then experiement to determine a viable directional containment for the filter thereafter.
