Hidden in the Midden was a bottleneck for many players on the first day. I tried it again the next day when no one was around. It seems progress reset for everyone if someone spoke to the NPC or dumped their totem on the ground causing all the lava puddles to despawn. The elemental wouldn't always cast either.
