First, Shepherd embarks on a mission to acquire Legion, a unique Geth unit with invaluable knowledge about the Reapers. Found aboard a derelict Reaper vessel, Legion is brought back to the Normandy, where it shares critical information about the Collectors' origins and the Reapers' plans. Despite the tension of bringing a Geth on board, Shepherd earns Legion’s loyalty by helping it resolve a conflict within the Geth consensus, further bolstering the Normandy’s strength.
As the team prepares for the final assault, Shepherd receives intel about Dr. Amanda Kenson, a scientist who has uncovered a Reaper artifact and is planning to delay the Reaper invasion by destroying a nearby mass relay. In a tense prelude to the endgame, Shepherd confronts Kenson, only to discover she has been indoctrinated by the Reapers. After a desperate battle, Shepherd is forced to stop Kenson and destroy the relay, buying the galaxy precious time but at the cost of thousands of lives—a heavy burden that foreshadows the trials to come.
With all preparations complete, Shepherd and the crew launch their assault on the Collector Base. The mission is fraught with danger as they navigate through waves of Collectors, facing harrowing choices that determine who survives. Tragically, not everyone makes it through—Thane, the noble Drell assassin, and Zaeed, the grizzled mercenary, both fall in battle. While Thane's loss is deeply felt, the crew pushes forward, driven by the stakes of the mission. Zaeed’s loss, while unfortunate, is overshadowed by his abrasive nature and questionable loyalty.
In the climactic showdown, Shepherd confronts the Collector General and the horrific Human-Reaper hybrid. After an intense battle, the team destroys the base, ensuring the Reapers’ plans are thwarted—at least for now. With the mission complete, the surviving crew returns to the Normandy, their bond stronger than ever despite the losses they’ve endured.
As the credits roll on Mass Effect 2, Shepherd reflects on the journey, the sacrifices made, and the battles still to come. The fight against the Reapers is far from over, but for now, the galaxy has been given a fighting chance, thanks to Commander RightBig Shepherd and their brave crew.
