Hollow Knight and the Joy of Exploration
6Ho boy, I did not mean for it to be this long between episodes of Dave Critiques, but time kept moving forward. I think it's because I found Hollow Knight so special that I wanted to make sure that the video was the best it could be. That stopped me working on it sometimes. Regardless, it's done, I'm quite happy with it, and I hope you enjoy it too. Now let's see if I can establish more of a rhythm to get the next episode out quicker, and future episodes out on a more regular basis.
The title of the video only tells half of the story. Yes, this is about the exploration of Hollow Knight and why that aspect of the game is what I found the most enjoyable, but it is also about how most Metroidvania games are actually quite linear, despite how much content they have locked off, and how many secrets they contain. There's also a section near the end of the video about the danger of interpreting bad game design as a deliberate decision by the game designer, and how that might be a reason why I found it so difficult to get a handle on the combat and platforming as I made my way through the game.
At the time of this writing, I've almost completed my second playthrough. I am more adept at using spells in combat, and in my use of the down slash and dashing around, but I still feel the same about the movement, and not being able to inhabit the character. I still feel at arm's length. Defeating the Traitor Lord and the White Palace were highlights of my second playthrough so far because of how much I was dreading both encounters and how I eventually got through them.
