Hollow Knight and the Psychology of Uncertainty
Hollow Knight seems very much inspired by the design of Dark souls with it's enemy and boss design and the environment of fear it is able to create. It's Something I've been thinking over for a while and how each differ in certain facets - the most important being Hollow KNights change to enemies and bosses to now show health.
This creates a lot more uncertainty to the encounters with not being able to ascertain your own progress to the point where fights become not just a battle of skill, but a battle of will. You wrestle with thoughts around how much health, how many hits, how many stages to the point it affects response time and problem solving
It heightens certain emotional elements of fear and paranoia during the fight, that stifle the mind, creating a sort of Performance anxiety situation revolving around fight or flight.
It's an interesting dynamic.
