A playthrough of Sega's 1993 licensed-based arcade-style platformer for the Sega Master System, Home Alone.

Home Alone was a PAL-region exclusive Master System release, and it's completely different from any other game based on the movie. This one was developed by Probe, and it plays a lot like their then recent movie-based platformer, Alien3.

The concept is quite simple in this one. Like in the SNES and Game Boy games, Kevin has to grab all the valuables in the house and get them into the safe before he gets caught by the Wet Bandits, the Wet Bandits escape with any loot, or time runs out. Unlike those games, however, the levels in the Master System game increase in complexity in terms of layouts, number of traps, and the amount of valuables scattered throughout. The core gameplay is solid and well-executed: the timer is a constant threat that does a good job at keeping things moving at a fast pace, and the game is quite difficult, but it does get much easier as you become more familiar with it and start memorizing the different house layouts.

It looks and sounds great, too. The in-game graphics are colorful and lively, the cinematics look excellent, and the music is far better than what's in most Master System games. It's not filled with overpowering, shrill notes and the melodies are often quite catchy.

I personally think the Master System version of the game is the best of the whole slew of Home Alone games. It had a limited release and was a couple of years late to the party, but it nails the gameplay. I honestly don't think I can say that about any of the others - not even the Genesis version played this well. What do you guys think?

Oh yeah, and is it just me, or does it sound like the safe is trying to play the Wheel of Fortune song when Kevin puts stuff in it?

If you'd like to check out the fun cinematic scenes that play when you fail, I added those in after the ending at 32:32.
