Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak - Everything you need to know in 2 minutes!
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak takes the beloved Homeworld universe and shifts it from the stars to the sand, reimagining the gameplay dynamics in a desert setting. This prequel spin-off however maintains key features of the franchise, such as persistent units between missions, and the single homebase approach for producing units, as opposed to base-building typical in other RTS games.
Despite being a more modern rendition, it lacks the innovation and brilliance that marked the original. While delivering on the expected mechanics, it fails to truly innovate or evolve the formula. The familiar Homeworld essence is present, but the game feels like a diluted version of its predecessor with the complexity stripped away.
With an 8 to 10-hour campaign, it's a solid experience that's marred by some anti-climactic moments. The combat, though engaging, feels scripted and predictable. Vehicles lack the variation that could elevate gameplay. The removal of the 3D combat dimension is a noticeable shift that takes away depth from the combat. The rock-paper-scissors balance between light, armored, and ranged vehicles defines engagements, and the gameplay pacing can be sluggish.
Deserts of Kharak also fails to address the franchise's deeper issue that your most powerful vehicles can be spammed to achieve victory in most situations, an issue exacerbated by the fleet persistence.
There are better RTS games out there, but at it's core, this is still an engaging story-driven adventure. While it's not as impressive as the original Homeworld, its simplified approach and user freindly interface offer a comfortable entry point for casual RTS fans seeking a basic and enjoyable experience.
Overall, I give this game 60 percent.
