This is Soil. A simple name for a very interesting Homeworld-like space RTS project undertaken by a lone indie developer using his own 3D engine.
Soil plays out much like our beloved Homeworld, as you can see from this 1vs1 skirmish against the AI, and if you are looking for more games like Homeworld, I have already compiled a list of those in the video linked above and below. Here in Soil, you have your main base / mothership which is mobile, resource collectors that you send out to gather minerals from asteroids, a research tree and lots of different warships which are constructed by the mothership in both internal and external bays.
The game is fully 3D and you can move your base and spaceships in all three axis with just two clicks. There is an overview mod, sort of a sensor mode like in Homeworld which helps you take in the entirety of local space in one view. Icons show you ship types and who they belong to so you don’t lose tactical information in this strategic view.
You will be happy to know there is no hard limit on ships. Only the available map resources and game’s performance on your PCs, will dictate with how many ships is the game still playable for you.
This is a very much in-development project and not even all the textures for warships and bases are there yet. But despite this besides 1vs1 skirmish the game has a campaign with a persistent fleet system, a base attack mode, a purely for fun race mode and a multiplayer mode which is very much a work in-progress.
As for the spaceships themselves there are the unarmed civilians like resource collectors and research ships while the warships go from small fighters and bombers all the way to huge carriers. There are regenerative energy shields in the game but only on a few ships, limited to one faction, and only a single type of ship, the battleship, can use microwarp jumps so far.
Each of these ships consist of multiple subsystems that can additionally house turret hardpoints, and they all have their own hitpoint pools. When a hardpoint’s hitpoint poll goes down to 0, all turrets attached to it stop working. If a subsystem is damaged it performs worse and if destroyed it no longer works at all. This means you can destroy engines to prevent ships from moving, destroy fighter bays to prevent fighters from coming out, or destroy the reactor to reduce energy production on ships. You can repair these ships, back at base or with support ships.
