Assume command of a battle fleet and deploy immediately to the Dust Zone, commander. Our main food supply station has gone dark and the United Earth Nations (UEN) needs to know why in this 4X RTS space sim. Manage your ships, control space stations, and watch your back.
Dust Fleet is more like Ephemeris because it also has the strategic 4X layer on top of the real time space fleet battles. While it has the same combat overview like Soil which is obviously inspired by the Homeworld’s sensor mode.
By using it you can not only view the whole of local space, and the developing tactical situation but also order your ships in full 3D space, attack enemy ships, launch or dock strike craft from different carriers and use the different unit markings to differentiate the ship classes at a glance.
Once battle is joined you frigates will probably be your first combat line and they can be built with a repair system or a weapons boost system making them into tanks or glass cannons. There are bombardment cruisers armed with missiles which have mini nukes as their payload and while being very powerful ships they can also do a lot of friendly fire damage, as missiles hit your ships or the blast radius obliterates your entire strike craft wings.
When this happens, you have to rebuild those starcraft inside their home carriers and you have to have the resources required for this. If you have spent all of those on reinforcements which are sent mid battle by local stations from which you ordered and built them, you have to mine for more using mining ships during the real time missions, or back on the galaxy map by constructing manufacturing space stations in solar systems you have taken over and adding resource production modules on those stations. These will give you resources each turn as that 4X part of the game is turn based.
You will find a whole research tree in the Dust Fleet, with tech for ships, stations and the overall campaign gameplay, and this lets you add shipyards for bigger ships on manufacturing stations, or research modules on science stations. Then you can then build those bigger ships, while the newly researched tech lets you add new weapons or systems onto those ships by using the ship loadout menu, where you can save your custom setups.
This is a very welcome feature in a Homeworld like game and it gives you much more room to experiment, and create more versatile ships, for different roles, without having many different ships in the game itself.
