The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events in the North-Atlantic and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassin Brotherhood, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templar Order, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set during the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars), who uncovers various secrets about the Assassin-Templar conflict while attempting to fix the company's servers. The main plot is set before and during the French and Indian War from 1752 to 1760, and follows Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American privateer and Assassin, who defects to the Templars and helps them hunt down members of his former Brotherhood after becoming disillusioned with their tactics. Gameplay in Rogue is very similar to that of Black Flag with a mixture of ship-based naval exploration and third-person land-based exploration, though some new features have been added.
Assassin's Creed Rogue is an action-adventure, stealth game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. The game features three main areas: the western North Atlantic (around the Gulf of Saint Lawrence), the fictional River Valley (partly inspired by the Hudson Valley), and New York City. The first two include numerous individual locations that can be explored, such as small islands, human settlements, naval forts, and shipwrecks. Like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, naval exploration and combat are a major component of the gameplay. The Morrigan, the ship that protagonist Shay Cormac captains, has a shallower draft than Edward Kenway's Jackdaw, allowing for river travel, and can be equipped with several new weapons, including Puckle guns, oil slicks which can be ignited, and an icebreaker. Additionally, enemy ships can board the Morrigan, and certain icebergs can be destroyed to create waves that damage smaller ships. However, the underwater diving missions featured in Black Flag have been removed as swimming in the North Atlantic causes the player's health to rapidly deplete due to the frigid water, though Shay is able to swim freely in the southerly waters of the River Valley.
Sail to the North and you will meet up with Jack. He will tell you the events that have been unfolding and how Monro is in danger. After speaking with him, you will need to rush to Monro's side.
On your way there, you will have the optional objective of avoiding damage. This seems easy, except there are several enemies lurking in bushes and trees. This area has no time limit, so in order to get the optional objective complete, make sure you constantly have Eagle Vision on. While in the trees, this isn't so important, but anytime you have to walk near a bush, make sure to check it. Use your guns to easily snipe enemies from a distance, and if they do jump you, make sure to smash the counter button as fast as you can to try to counterattack them and avoid the damage.
Once you reach your goal, you will find Monro and some men fighting off a few foes. Deal with them, and Monro will speak with you. You will need to walk with him for a short distance, and then the Assassin's will show up. They will jump down and attack, and you must fend them off while protecting Monro. He can only take a few hits before he dies, so make sure to stick near his side, or be ready for a quick pistol shot to save his life. After the enemies are dealt with, Shay will insist on tracking down his former colleague. Climb up the stone wall and synchronize with the viewpoint to see all the enemies here.
To get 100% sync here, you will need to kill all enemies without being seen. First, assassinate the guy below the viewpoint. Quickly run forward and jump down on the next guy. Climb the wall and assassinate the third, but before moving, turn on Eagle Vision. There is an enemy lurking in the bush behind the fourth enemy. Shoot him with a sleep dart then kill him, then assassinate the fourth guy.
Pull out your sleep darts again. Shoot the guy on the bridge, and the lone guy at the top of the cliff to the left of the bridge. Although these aren't necessary moves, it makes things much easier. Jump into the water, kill the sleeping guy on the bridge, then climb the wall and kill the sleeping guy here. Walk up and double assassinate the guys looking over the cliff then head towards the final guy. Make sure you have Eagle Vision active, as there is another enemy lurking in a bush near this final guy. Deal with him, then assassinate the final enemy to be done here.
