Horizon Chase (Android)
So this is something completely different and something that I never foresaw coming because I largely view the mobile gaming scene as a growing cancer to gaming in general. The main reasons why I think that is because mobile games are normally free to play, micro transaction to death, shallow turds. Psikyo and Sega have proven that they can take excellent games and completely ruin them by shoving ads and even locking features behind a paywall that were previously not even unlockables, but standard features of those games originally. Also pretty much every action game's controls has to be dumbed down or easified in order to be playable with touchscreen controls. However Horizon Chase in the exception to those rules. This is not just my favorite mobile game ever, but I do consider it one of the best racing games I've ever played.
I first discovered Horizon Chase on Steam, rather I discovered Horizon Chase Turbo. I bought the game on discount and booted it up to find absolute arcade racing bliss. The graphics, while very simple compared to modern racing games, were very clean and the music was simply amazing. Not only was it reminiscent of Top Gear on the SNES but the music in fact was composed by the exact same composer who did Top Gear for the SNES. The gameplay is almost EXACTLY the same as Top Gear as well with a few tweaks. The are no more pit stops as there are now fuel pickups on the tracks, and there are "track tokens" to collect to use to unlock things in the game as well as add to the completeness of the game. Achieving first place and collecting all the track tokens will earn you a super trophy for that track.
Anyway so I went to leave my good review on Steam and ran into some negative reviews claiming that Horizon Chase Turbo was nothing but a port of a trash mobile game. I then went to the Google Play store and found that Horizon Chase was indeed a MOBILE game! It was also quite a bit cheaper on Google Play. I was blown away initially when I found this out because I was really enjoying the game and thought there was no way possible that I could ever enjoy a mobile racing game that much. The game on Google Play is free to download the first few races and then requires an actual purchase for the whole game. Completely ad free! Finally a good game not ruined by being forced to deal with ads or micro transactions! I initially hooked my XBOX One S controller up to my phone to play it and decided to just give the touchscreen controls a shot and found that they are excellent! Not once do the controls ever get in my way. The soft buttons are perfectly spaced apart and my thumb naturally slides over them. The brakes engage when you're not pressing the gas pedal so there's none of that automatic acceleration garbage going on. The game plays like an absolute dream and makes this version the ultimate portable version of the game since all you really need is your phone. The phone I ran and recorded this from is my Galaxy S9+, but it also ran silky smooth on my Galaxy S7 (Snapdragon). Don't let the capture fool you. This game runs extremely smooth on a phone at 60 frames per second, even while recording. This video is pretty much just a public service announcement to racing fans everywhere that you should get this game if you'd love to have a true and challenging for all the right reasons racing game on the go.
