To boost at the start of the race, the countdown timer will start at 3 and before it changes to 2, you hit accelerate (R2 by default on the PS4) and you'll get purple exhaust flames and if you don't do it exactly right you get green exhaust flames and if you flub it altogether, you get nothing.

Depending on how you do, you get your turbo/nitro circles filled up but to what extent, I'm not certain - I'm just aiming for the purple flame and everything else is secondary.

Just make sure you aim yourself - there's nothing more annoying than boosting into someone ahead of you. Well I guess having a piano fall on you would be more annoying but you know what I mean.
