PLOT From FTF Wiki
In 2009, 18-year-old Noah Baker is asked to house-sit one night at the residence of Roy Carson, friend and client to his realtor father Walter. Noah is driven by Walter to the Carson residence where he gains entry with a key hidden in the backyard.
Noah immediately begins his house-sitting duties upon being directly contacted by Roy through text. After feeding the family dog Zeke, Roy asks for Noah’s assistance in getting rid of a computer virus on his office desktop, which also contains the home’s CCTV system. Noah finds the office a suitable place to complete his homework and promptly fixes the computer virus issue. Throughout the night, he also periodically texts his girlfriend, Evelyn Cooper.
Noah is asked by Roy to do some nighttime grocery shopping. Using a $100 bill from his nightstand, Noah uses Roy’s son Alec’s bike to arrive at Knuck’s, a nearby convenience store. While there, he encounters his school friends Andy and Turner, who tell him that his ex-girlfriend Cara had stopped by and shopped shortly before his arrival.
At 9:46 p.m., Noah returns to the house on Alec’s bike. Sometime later, he hears a knock at the door and upon investigating, finds a bundle of flowers placed on the doormat. He takes them inside not thinking much of the occurrence and retreats to Roy’s office to start on his homework, which he had been repeatedly distracted from doing.
At 1:36 a.m., the power in the house suddenly cuts off. Noah hears Zeke barking from outside and investigates, discovering the power box and switching the electricity back on. Already unnerved, Noah begins exchanging texts with an unfamiliar number but dismisses it and proceeds to return to studying. Unbeknownst to him, however, someone has already entered the house.
Noah once again hears a commotion from downstairs and discovers that the oven has been strangely turned on. He promptly turns it off and, having had enough, immediately contacts Andy demanding that he tell Turner – who was known to be mischievous – to stop with the apparent prank. But to Noah’s surprise, he learns that Andy and Turner are still together, but at the former’s house. He attributes his paranoia to his lack of sleep and returns to the office, but not without checking the security monitor.
To his horror, Noah discovers a female intruder down the hallway from the office. She makes her way there and ominously stands outside the door holding a kitchen knife. During their brief exchange through the closed door, the girl is revealed to be Cara, who feigns reconciliation with Noah before outright threatening to kill him and Evelyn. Noah quickly exits the office to hide in the laundry room across the hall, where he peeks through the blinds and windows of the door. While Cara is distracted in searching the office for him, Noah sneaks out and flees the house.
The game’s epilogue reveal that Cara had already fled when the police arrived at the home, having been contacted by Walter. Cara’s backstory is also revealed: she and Noah had met online, and both began dating despite their three-year age difference. Two months into the relationship, however, Cara started abusing meth and soon became addicted. After multiple failed attempts to help her, Noah ended their relationship, infuriating her as a result. It is also revealed that Cara was under the influence during the incident and had attempted to deceive officers about her intentions that night. But the security footage proves too incriminating, and she is ultimately sentenced for a long, unspecified amount of time.
