San Diego Comic Con has always been one of the most exciting times of the year for fans of pop culture such as myself. And as SDCC was coming to a close back in July 2014, I didn’t think things could get any more hyped.

That is, until some anonymous hero out there, released a small, three minute long video on the internet. A video that the majority of us were never meant to see. A proof of concept for a superhero film that the studio had zero faith in working.

I am of course talking about the test footage for the Deadpool movie. A movie based on a character that was, at best, a cult favorite, but not really a character that mainstream audiences would recognize.

Yet today, Deadpool is perhaps one of the most well known superhero properties out there now. But how did it get to this point? How did Deadpool go from a b-tier character appearing in X-Men comics, to the star of a film that was never meant to be, to the juggernaut of an IP, that not even Disney seems able to kill?
