The Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building standing at a whopping 828 meters. It is 2.5 times the size of the Eiffel Tower and it has the world's longest elevator.

So how can we build such a high building without it topping over? Those clever engineers came up with an amazing design, its buttress core has three wings which act like an axel preventing the building from twisting and turning.

The building didn't come cheap and it reportedly cost 1.5 billion US dollars to construct. It's not surprising they ran out of money when building it! But not to worry UAE President himself Mr Khalifa bailed them out on the condition that they name the building after him!

The world's tallest building has some amazing stats:
It is 828 meters tall and has 163 floors
There are 57 lifts/elevators
The lifts/elevators move at 10 meters a second
At peak times 36 megawatts of electricity is used
1 million liters of water are needed to run the building EVERY DAY!

Our very own James May contemplated how we could build an elevator to take us in to space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=annVRxRjj4c&list=PLMrtJn-MOYmfqNgyPxx6NYMZnd25y4shc&index=15
