[Edit: In the video, I said to drill out the "~28mm required," but that is a typo which should have read ~20mm. I used a 3/4" spade bit, which converts to just over 19mm, and I had to widen one side of one of the inserts with a file to get it to fit over the light mount. ]

⚠ ️ Disclaimer:
I did not consult YLLVape on this modification. I do know that they had tried wood as an insulator for the AE before settling on steel, but I know not the species of wood or how it was treated. Please do your own research before considering a modification like this, and attempt any or all of it *AT YOUR OWN RISK*.⚠ ️

Oh my, what WILL they say about this one? 🤐

Like my VaporBrothers mod that spawned the VB1.5, we are riding on the cutting-edge over here with this one; flying in the face of best practice, rigid rules, and inside of the box thinking. This video is being published for the hypothetical audience of exactly nobody that I expect to actually try it themselves. This is more about proving to myself that heat-treating hardwood to use as an insulator in the AE is a viable option.

Given the amount of time that I have being using my two AE that are now lined with wood, I am confident that this is solution will hold up in the long term; at least in the manner in which I use it. I have seen zero degradation of the wooden inserts or surrounding body, after many, many bowls at maximum temperatures. Admittedly, I have not done testing for degradation in cases of long sessions back-to-back, as it is not my use style, so I have little need to run those tests. My goal was simply to find a viable, DIY way to replace the fiberglass wool insulation with a material that is largely inert.

The airpath on the AE is properly isolated, in my opinion, but fiberglass wool was never a good choice for insulation inside of an inhalation device, if for the public relations nightmare alone. I told that to YLL early in the game; they didn't listen. 🙉 🙊 🙈 C'est la Vie.

Should anybody decide to actually try this; a couple of pointers:

1. Hardwood species that take well to heat-treating: white oak, red maple, and eucalyptus have shown promising stability after carbonization. These species tend to retain their structure better and resist excessive shrinkage or brittleness.

2. Materials and tools required for working on the AE include:
-a T6 Torx driver
-high-temperature PTFE tape
-silver-based lead-free solder (a high-heat solder gun is req)
-a heat-gun for removing the false bottom/sticker
-a dust mask & potentially nitrile gloves for the fiberglass removal
[things like flux, 99% ISO alc, cotton swabs and extra o-rings, are less necessary but definitely make things easier]

3. Tools and materials I used to make the inserts:
-3cm diameter hardwood dowel
-old toaster oven
-1/4" drill bit, 3/4" spade bit
-mitre box/woodsaw
-drillpress/bench clamp
-round file/sandpaper
-the determination of the village idiot

4. Have fun. If you weren't going to use it with fiberglass in it anyways, who cares if you fuck it up... at least you weren't wasting time on your phone gooning for those 3 hours. Build some skills, be a man. 🪚🔨 💪 😂
