How Intel & AMD Made 3D Faster - 3DNow! vs. SSE
2,480These days AMD is synonymous with 3D; after all they make graphics cards & the chipsets which power them, but back in the 90s, their main focus was CPUs, and their main rival was Intel. Not very much has changed in that respect, but the late 90s was a different world where 3D games were still in their infancy. This meant that new technologies were flying about to try and squeeze the most from systems at the time. From AMD, one of those was the 3DNow! instruction set incorporated into the AMD K6-2 CPU. Intel's version was SSE, which was really an extension to their MMX instruction set. So in this video we'll take a quick look at both. At what they do, and ultimately at who won out in the early days of 3D gaming.
