How Leveling works & Why it's best Not to in Oblivion Remastered (The Elder Scrolls IV)
In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, the leveling system is unique but can be challenging due to the game’s level-scaling mechanics. Below, I’ll explain how leveling works, why it might be best to avoid leveling up too quickly (or at all in some cases), and strategies to manage leveling effectively, especially for early-game players aiming for Level 2 in the Imperial City.
How Leveling Works in Oblivion Remastered
Major Skills and Level Progression:
Your character has 7 major skills (chosen during character creation, e.g., Blade, Sneak, Restoration) and 14 minor skills (all others, e.g., Alchemy, Armorer).
Leveling up requires 10 increases in major skills (any combination, e.g., 5 in Blade, 3 in Sneak, 2 in Restoration). Minor skill increases don’t count toward leveling.
Once you achieve 10 major skill increases, a message appears: “You should rest and meditate on what you’ve learned.” You must sleep in a bed (e.g., your Waterfront shack or an inn like The King and Queen Tavern) to level up.
Attribute Bonuses:
Upon leveling up, you choose three attributes to increase (e.g., Strength, Endurance, Intelligence).
The bonus for each attribute (+1 to +5) depends on how many related skills (major or minor) you improved since your last level-up:
+5: 8-10 skill increases (e.g., Blade +5, Armorer +3 for Strength).
+3: 4-7 skill increases.
+1: 0-3 skill increases.
Luck always gets a +1 bonus (no skills govern it).
Example: If you raise Blade (major) 4 times and Armorer (minor) 4 times, you get +5 Strength at level-up.
Level-Up Process:
Sleep to trigger the level-up screen, where you allocate attribute points.
Your health increases by 1/10th of your Endurance per level (retroactive, so boosting Endurance early is key).
Magicka and Stamina are based on Intelligence and Agility, respectively, but don’t increase automatically with levels.
Level Scaling:
Enemies, loot, and quest rewards scale with your level. As you level up, enemies get stronger (e.g., bandits upgrade from basic gear to chainmail or glass armor), and common enemies like wolves are replaced by tougher ones like trolls or minotaurs.
NPCs (e.g., guards, quest enemies) also scale, making fights harder if your combat skills lag.
