1. Don’t Take the trade-in lightly. If necessary keep it out altogether and sell to a third party or privately
2. Don’t Collect pricing in person or on the test drive/first visit. All initial price shopping should be done online because at this point dealers are taking advantage of a strong sellers market.
3. Don’t express a strong urgency. The more time you have the more leverage you’ve got when negotiating. If you’re in a press, and a dealer knows it, they will do what they can to protect the price they want you to pay.
4. Not taking advantage of your loyalty. Go to the higher ups. Approach GMs and Managers letting them know how many vehicles you or your family has purchased. Let them know that you deserve better than these shenanigans.
5. Don’t be too “Logical” .. Absolutely positively LOW BALL. If you’re not risking the whole deal, you’re not going to get much to happen. This typically has a lot better of an effect in person with your wallet out though.
6. You are not using a car broker or broker like service, or at the very minimum a tool like SaveOnMyAuto to at least be put in touch with a few dealers at once. This can save you valuable time and start negotiations in a favorable way.
7. Not checking with your bank BEFORE walking in to see what your estimated APR could be ... in the event of taking either a rebate or promo APR, your mind will tell you do the Promo APR because that’s responsible. Check with your bank first so you can combine a very low rate WITH the rebate.
8. Not taking the task to Social Media. Post a status or a story asking your friends if they are also looking for a vehicle of the same Make so that maybe you can combine efforts and do a 2 for 1.
9. Not taking advantage of a lease extension. Because of COVID, many banks are even letting people do double extensions so in essence instead of allowing only 6 months, Mercedes for example was allowing 12 months a few months ago. Definitely use a lease extension as leverage to let them know you’ve bought yourself some time.
10. You’re not using enough online resources to research like the forums, LeaseHackr, Edmunds, or even car deal YouTubers such as myself, Your Auto Advocate, 60minutecar, Dave Ramsey, and Kevin Hunter!
