Pending on what type of metal item you are holding will determine how easy this is to do. Took a bit of trail and error to figure out why the tress would only sometimes protect me.

This can be done with the bigger bulky items, but it is hard to see where you need to clip the strike point into a wall/tree.

Also note if a wall is not high enough, you will still get hit by lightning.
