Steps:
- To do this you will need an external hard drive or memory stick, and you’ll need to make sure it is large enough to save your backup. Before you start you should remove anything you want to keep from the external drive because it will be deleted when it gets formatted for use as a backup drive.
- Connect your external drive to your mac!
- Click the apple logo button from the top left of the screen and then open ‘system preferences’.
- In system preferences, open ‘time machine’.
- Click ‘select backup disk’.
- Choose the disk you want to use.
- If the drive isn't already compatible for time machine, it will need to format your disk, this will erase anything already on it.
- Once youve done that, automatic time machine backups will start. Provided there is enough space It will save a backup automatically every hour for the last 24 hours, a daily backup for every day in the last month and weekly backups for all previous months.
- If you’d prefer to backup manually instead, disable the automatic backup option, and then enable ‘show time machine in menu bar’.
- Find the new icon in your menu bar, click it and then select backup now.
