To boost start in Mario Kart: Double Dash, hold the A button when the signal turns green.

This is difficult to pull off and takes some practice. Another idea is to watch Lakiu's arm instead of the signals; his arm points when down a new signal appears, and when it goes green, press A when you see his arm pointing down - not before.

In co-op, you can achieve an even stronger boost start by both successfully performing a boost.

To mini-turbo in Mario Kart: Double Dash, while drifting with the L or R button, tilt the analogue stick in the opposite direction of the turn, creating sparks from the back of the kart. Hold them until they go from red to blue, then release for the best possible mini-turbo.

If you are attempting a mini-turbo in co-op mode, the rear player does the analogue stick movements.
