To fly in Super Mario World, you need to find the feather power-up. It appears fairly regularly across the game, whether it’s in blocks or dropped from flying Super Koopa enemies with flashing caps. Grabbing the feather gives you a cape.

Now you have a cape, run uninterrupted for a few seconds until Mario’s arms are raised, then jump. Keep holding the run button and you’ll then soar into the sky.

When you are at the top of the screen, you’ll eventually begin to dive. When you do, you can start flying by pressing left on the D-Pad, causing you to bounce up. Then, when you dive down once more, press left again, and repeat, bouncing up and down across the screen. Remember you must tap the d-pad each time, only pressing left and releasing when Mario starts to dive, while also still holding the run button the whole time.

If you time it right, you can not only maintain your height but also climb slightly each time you fly up. Of course, this takes some practice, so don’t worry if you can’t do that right away, and remember to use the sound of Mario’s dives to help you with the timing.

Two other things to note is that you can dive as much as you need to before pressing the d-pad again to continue flying - and that you can also fly to the left. This works in the exact same way, except you must press right instead of left to bounce up.

Hope this guide to flying in Super Mario World has proven useful - it is a difficult skill to learn so don’t worry if it takes some time for it to click, but once it does, it’s one of the most satisfying ways to explore the game.
