About This Video
Horses are useful for a variety of reasons in Minecraft, from helping you conserve your stamina on long trips to helping you ride into battle. They’re a fairly versatile mob, and add a lot to the game. Horses were originally introduced in Minecraft via a mod developer, but when Mojang seen how well they fitted into the ecosystem they were added to the Vanilla version of the game.
As with most friendly mobs in the game, it’s possible to breed horses to make more and grow your stable. You’ll typically find horses spawning in groups of 2-6, and can also find them in a pen built by villagers.
To breed horses in Minecraft, you’ll need to tame them first. To do this, you need to press the ‘use’ button on the horse while you have nothing in your hand. After a couple of seconds, you’ll be bucked off the horse. You’ll need to keep doing this until you see heart particle effects, at which point the horse has been fully tamed.
To breed horses, you’ll need two tamed horses and a golden apple or carrot. Feeding a golden apple or a golden carrot to both horses will activate ‘love mode’, during which they’ll mate and produce a foal. The odds are that the horse will look like one of the parents, but there’s around a one in three chance that it will be a completely random color.
You can also breed a horse with a donkey in the game to produce a mule. Mules cannot be bred, but they are like an enhanced version of a donkey. The process for mating a horse and a donkey is the same as mating two horses.
