How to Change Recycle Bin Storage Size in Windows 10 [Tutorial]

Windows 10 ships with a level of customization features that we haven’t seen in many other versions of the operating system. Something completely new to this iteration of Windows is a set of settings exclusive to the Recycle Bin.

You can adjust various settings of the Recycle Bin on Windows 10, and in this guide, we'll show you how to do it.

On Windows 10, the Recycle Bin is a great feature designed to store deleted files, instead of erasing them immediately from the hard drive. If you ever need them back, you can use this feature to restore one or multiple files as necessary.

The only caveat is that Recycle Bin won't keep all your deleted files indefinitely. Depending on the size of the partition, only five to fifteen percent of space is reserved to store deletions. As space fills up, Windows 10 will start erasing the oldest files to make room to accommodate new deletions, reducing the number of files you can recover.

However, you can adjust the settings to change the maximum storage size to increase the number of files you can restore, remove files bypassing the Recycle Bin, and even add a confirmation dialog to prevent accidental deletions.

Up through Windows 8, the Recycle Bin just is what it is—a container for your deleted files. In Windows 10, we can make changes to the Recycle Bin force it to behave in several new and useful ways.

Any time you delete something in Windows, it goes to the Recycle Bin. It sits there until the Recycle Bin reaches it’s preconfigured maximum size (or until you empty the bin), at which point Windows deletes the oldest files in the bin to make room for new ones. This gives you a chance to restore deleted files before they’re permanently gone.

Most people just leave the Recycle Bin alone, never adjusting its default settings and letting it do its job. Today, though, we’re going to talk about those settings you can adjust.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).
