Search for a match, quickly access customize menu, go to gear and choose any item you want, don't buy the item/color just leave it there and wait for the matchmake to put you into a match.

Enjoy your free gear. Items will stay as long as you don't unequip it.

! This is very hard to pull out cuz matchmaking is so fast, try to slowdown your connection by putting a stream on. If you fail, you can't access options/leave match buttons if you were put into an already started match... you gotta finish the game and then leave (or just quit the game). If you get put to match briefing you can leave.

Took me about 50 tries to get this.
