Axolotl are a passive mob that were announced at the Minecraft Live 2020 and will be added in the 2021 Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update.
Players can find Axolotl at y level 63 in complete darkness, where there is a block less than 5 blocks below them and in pools of water in the new Lush Cave biomes in Minecraft 1.17.
Axolotls have five colour variants: Cyan, Gold, Leucitic/Lucy (Pink), Wild (Brown) and Blue. Blue being the most rare variant which can only be obtained by breeding; Axolotls can be bred buckets of tropical fish.
When out of water Axolotl will navigate to the nearest water source, they will die if they are outside of water for 5 minutes but they will not die if they are in rain or thunderstorms.
Axolotl cannot be moved by flowing water but they are affected by bubble columns. Players can unlock "The Cutest Predator" and "The Healing Power of Friendship" when fighting hostile mobs alongside Axolotl.
Axolotls give Regeneration and remove Mining Fatigue when a player kills a mob they are attacking. They are hostile towards every underwater mob apart from turtles and dolphins; players can make Axolotl attack Drowned and Guardians by luring them with tropical fish.
When Axolotls take damage they play dead, gain regeneration for 10 seconds and will be ignored by hostile mobs. Hostile mobs ignore Axolotl when they are healing.
