How to Fix Microphone Quality & Distortion on Stream Labs OBS (Add Filters)
Improving microphone quality and reducing distortion in Streamlabs OBS involves using audio filters. Let’s walk through the steps:
Gain Filter:
The “Gain” filter allows you to adjust the loudness of your microphone audio. Turn it down to decrease audio levels or up to increase them. Most microphones already have a built-in gain control, but you can fine-tune it using the Streamlabs Desktop gain filter.
Aim for your microphone audio level to peak in the yellow section on the meter. If it reaches the red level, distortion may occur. Adjust accordingly to keep your voice clear and pleasant.
Compressor Filter:
Adding a compressor filter automatically lowers your microphone’s volume to prevent it from peaking above 0dB (which causes distortion). After a loud noise passes, it gradually turns the volume back up2.
In Streamlabs OBS, you can set up a compressor filter as follows:
Open the “Mic/Aux” filters window.
Click the “+” button and select “Compressor.”
Adjust the “Ratio,” “Threshold,” “Attack,” “Release,” and “Output Gain” settings to achieve balanced and consistent voice levels.
Click “Close” to save your changes.
Advanced Audio Settings:
To monitor the effect of filters, open the advanced audio settings by clicking the settings cog in the mixer section.
Change your audio monitoring for the microphone to “Monitor Only.” This lets you hear exactly what your viewers will hear from your microphone, allowing fine-tuning of audio setting
