How to FREE UP Disk Space on Windows 10 or 11 PC (49 Gbs or More!)
Freeing up disk space on a Windows 10 or 11 PC involves several strategies to manage and reduce the amount of data stored on your hard drive. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you reclaim disk space:
1. Use Windows Built-in Tools:
Storage Sense:
Go to Settings -System - Storage.
Enable "Storage Sense" to automatically clean up temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and manage older files in your Downloads folder.
Disk Cleanup:
Type "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu and run the app.
Select the drive you wish to clean (usually C:), and it will scan your computer for temporary files, downloaded program files, system error memory dump files, and more. Check the boxes for the types of files you want to delete, then click "OK".
2. Manage System Restore Points and Shadow Copies:
Open Disk Cleanup with administrator privileges.
After the initial scan, click "Clean up system files," then look for "Previous Windows installation(s)" and "Temporary Windows installation files" if you've recently upgraded Windows.
You can also clean up "System Restore and Shadow Copies" to free up space, but be cautious as this removes old restore points which could be useful if you need to restore your system.
3. Uninstall Unnecessary Programs:
Navigate to Settings - Apps - Apps & features, or use the Control Panel's "Programs and Features."
Uninstall software you no longer need or use.
4. Remove Duplicate or Large Files:
Use third-party software like "Duplicate Cleaner" or "CCleaner" to find and remove duplicate files.
For large files, you can manually search through folders like Downloads or Videos to delete or move files to external storage.
5. Clear Browser Data:
In browsers like Chrome or Edge, go to settings or history to clear cache, cookies, and browsing history which can take up significant space over time.
6. Disable Hibernation:
If you don't use hibernation, you can disable it to free up space equal to your RAM size. Use Command Prompt as administrator and type:
powercfg -h off
7. Compress Files or Use NTFS Compression:
For files or folders that are not frequently accessed, you can right-click, go to properties, and enable compression under the "General" tab.
8. Move Files to Cloud or External Storage:
Consider moving large files, photos, or videos to cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox, or to an external hard drive.
9. Check for Large Windows Updates Files:
Windows updates can leave behind large install files. After ensuring an update has been installed correctly, you might be able to delete these using Disk Cleanup.
10. Use Windows 10/11’s Storage Settings:
Under Settings - System- Storage, you can see what's taking up space and manage it. Features like "Temporary files" are particularly useful here for cleaning up after updates or installations.
