In Minecraft snapshot 13w38b, Mojang was testing out implementing air as an item into the game. For whatever reason, they made it so you could obtain the air item by killing certain mobs. To be more specific, you could obtain it by killing villagers, bats, silver fish, or certain sizes of slimes.
