This video will show you how to get EA / Maxis' The Sims 2 Version 1.0 to run on a Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows Vista - based machine without having to patch the game and without having to create a disc image.

For those who do not wish to watch the video, essentially setting Sims2.exe to Windows 98 / Windows ME compatibility mode and running the executable as an administrator will allow the game to be played (but will not allow the game to be shut down - for this I recommend either just minimizing the game or shutting down / rebooting the machine.)
