About the game:

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

Après divers jeux flash et mobiles, le studio canadien Cellar Door Games passe à la vitesse supérieure avec son premier projet PC. Son titre, Rogue Legacy, ne laisse guère de place au doute : il s'agit encore d'un Rogue-like, genre à la mode ces derniers temps.


Décidément, les mécanismes issus du vénérable Rogue reviennent en force. Même si tous les jeux qui les utilisent ne peuvent être qualifiés de Rogue-like, au sens strict du terme, beaucoup partagent deux points essentiels au genre : la génération aléatoire des niveaux, et la mort permanente. Parmi les récents succès exploitant ces éléments de gameplay, citons notamment The Binding of Isaac, Don't Starve, ou encore Realm of the Mad God. Bien qu'ils diffèrent sur de nombreux aspects, ils partagent ce tronc commun qui en font des titres exigeants, souvent frustrants même, mais procurant un grand sentiment d'accomplissement une fois domptés. Rogue Legacy appartient indéniablement à la même famille. Même s'il prend la forme d'un jeu d'action / plates-formes en 2D (genre parfois qualifié barbarement de « metroidvania »), le cœur de son gameplay le rapproche en fait des Rogue-like.
