4Being good at Warcraft 3, ever since I could remember, was something that mattered to me.
I remember there had been times in my career when I had meet people in real-life that, much to my glee, had heard of Warcraft 3 and even have it installed. That momentary flash of excitement is almost always met with an afterburn of slow disinterest, as it becomes very clear that my new Warcraft 3 friend doesn't "really" have an interest in Warcraft 3 like I do.
I mean, watching and posting Warcraft 3 replays and analysis is something I did as a teenager. My very first internet community was wcreplays.com - just seeing the URL still brings warm and positive memories. I had met and interacted with many Warcraft 3 legends in those early days, only back then we didn't think of them as legends. They were just the best players at the time - there was always a sense of inclusivity this obsession with competency brought.
You know, if you were good at Warcraft 3, it didn't matter to these people who you were, where you came from, what you were doing in your real-life. Nope - it was just "You know how to do a 4 unit surround? Come sit with us."
It is surreal to me that the times, as crazy and foreign as they are in 2025, have a odd whiff of familiarity about them. What is the scent?
