Are you trying to watch a video using the AV1 codec, but it won't play on Windows 10? That's because you don't have the required codec. Here's how to get it for free.

Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, the AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an emerging free and open source video codec designed specifically to become the next standard for video streaming over the internet.

AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an open, royalty-free video coding format designed for video transmissions over the Internet. It is being developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a consortium of firms from the semiconductor industry, video on demand providers, and web browser developers, founded in 2015. The AV1 bitstream specification includes a reference video codec.

Microsoft has released a beta version of the AV1 Video Extension app that will allow you to play AV1 videos on your Windows 10 build 17763 or higher PC. When you install the AV1 video codec, any app such as Microsoft Edge, Movies & TV, and Windows Media Player can use the codec to play AV1 videos.

This extension is an early beta version of the AV1 software decoder that lets you play videos that have been encoded using the AV1 video coding standard developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Since this is an early release, you might see some performance issues when playing AV1 videos. Microsoft is continuing to improve this extension. If you allow apps to be updated automatically, you should get the latest updates and improvements when Microsoft releases them.

This tutorial will show you how to add AV1 codec support to play AV1-encoded video content in Windows 10 for your account.

The new AV1 codec is not enabled by default. Here is how you can install AV1 codec in Windows 10 to enable AV1 video codec support.

AV1 codec is open source and developed by Open Media as a successor to the existing VP9 codec. Just like with VP9, AV1 codec is developed for the web use like online streaming media. Compared to libvpx-vp9, x264 high profile, and x264 main profile, AV1 codec achieved higher data compression while keeping the quality. Not only that but unlike HEVC, AV1 codec is royalty-free. This simply means that the creators don't have to worry about unnecessary patent infringements.

Considering the open nature of the AV1 codec, Microsoft included support for AV1 codec in Windows 10. For videos encoded with AV1 codec to play, you first need to install AV1 codec in Windows 10 and enable it. Without the AV1 codec, the built-in player cannot play AV1 encoded videos. You will see the "This item was encoded in a format that's not supported" 0xc00d5212 error. Installing the AV1 codec will fix the 0xc00d5212 error.

A lot of companies, such as Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Mozilla, are already behind this project, and it's expected to replace Google's VP9 codec and take over the costly HEVC/H.265 codec.

Although there isn't a lot of content encoded with AV1, if you want to stay ahead of the curve, or you came across a video using the new codec, and you can't watch it, Microsoft is already making available an extension for Windows 10 to play AV1 videos on your device.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung).
