The hardest part about the zombie apocalypse is the water and power going out. Carpentry won't fix the power, but when you hit level 4 Carpentry you can craft rain collector barrels to gather water. I don't need to explain how important water is to survival, but I can explain how quickly you can level up Carpentry.

In this video Iโ€™m gonna teach you how to properly level Carpentry from 0 to 10 in 11 minutes, sort of.
This depends on your occupation and traits, but if you want to make it to level 10 in as short a time as possible you'll want to start your character with the Carpenter occupation with the Handy and Fast Learner traits. Then you'll go to a library and pick up the proper skill books. These boosts make it so that carpentry, or any skill, is leveled as quickly as possible.
