Having recently made a YouTube channel trailer, I thought Id share some practical concepts and editing techniques so you can make one for your own channel. Whether you want more subscribers on your youtube channel or viewers at your next movie premiere, one of the best ways is by making an epic trailer, which can live front and center on your youtube channel page for its visitors. So lets get right into the tips for making your trailers more captivating.
1. Short & Sweet Message.
The first thing to keep in mind is that a trailer needs to have a message for the viewer to connect to. When creating your trailer, assume the people watching are learning about you for the first time. You gotta make sure your video answers the questions Who you are and what your content is about. For example, our channel Filmora Video Editor is all about empowering your video creation journey with the tools and production tutorials.
Since the people you’re targetting dont know who you are, you’ll have to make your pitch quickly. Try to hook you viewers within the first 10 seconds, keeping your entire trailer to under one minute.
To help you create your own message,
1. First identify which desire or need your channel addresses for your audience
2. Then share your unique solution or approach with them.
For example, you guys desire is to become great video creators and we help you by providing tools and tutorials every step on the way.
2. Showcase your personality.
People gravitate towards others, thats why we tend to gravitate towards content and designs with other people in it and it’s also why showing off a bit of your personality can be a great way to draw viewers in. Our channel has 3 main hosts, so we focused on using clips that showcase our personalities, interspersed with text and voice over helping our message shine through.
3. Show, don’t tell
Pull together different clips from your best videos on your YouTube channel. Use them as a showcase to give your viewers a taste of what they can expect from subscribing to your channel. Just use the most stunning images and memorable moments you have. Remember you just have less than 1 minute!
4. Music Selection
Find something upbeat, epic and short. Maybe with some slower and some faster parts, its usually kind of time consuming to find the perfect song with those kind of variations so you can even consider combining multiple songs to to help create a emotional arc. It helps if the songs are in the same key so they can be play next to each other without a noticeable difference.
Key:
5. Cut to the beat
One more advanced editing tip that helps create emotion in your trailer is to cut to the beat. Once you have your music track or tracks selected, find the parts where the beat intensifies and practice some fast cuts there, utilizing a different shot for every one or two beats. This trick is super evident in our trailer where we add more clips to the beat towards the climax of the song we chose. It helps to let the music determine the cuts, rather than making the cuts first and trying to match the music to them.
6. Use Effects / Transitions
Another great way of making your trailer more epic is by using effects and transitions. Filmora comes with a variety of transitions, motion graphics, text, and filters you can use to spice up your video. Check out this part of our channel trailer where we utilize split screens to enhance the intricate effects of our cuts, or these transitions we use to help tell the story. *flicker effect between 2 shots. *Title animations.
7. End strong
Your trailer should end with a strong reason why viewers should come back to your channel and subscribe for new videos. Like in our trailer, we showed you all the cool things you can learn and do with filmora. But you have to make sure you directly ask your viewers to subscribe, the goal is to make them take action and press that sweet sweet button. You can also use YouTube end screen annotations to add subscribe buttons at the end of your video.
Thanks for watching everyone. Hope these concepts and tricks make your trailers more impactful and help empower your inner creator. Please hit that sweet sweet subscribe button if you havent already. Were uploading filmmaking and product tutorials every week. See ya next time!
