How to make sculpture frame
Here is a tutorial, presenting my style of making sculpture frames and pedestals. Also filler material, for extra toughness and clay conservation.
Remember: that this method is valid for medium size sculptures, if you scale it up, on bigger statues, clay do not help on toughness, but becomes too heavy to even support it’s own weight, at the same time, making the whole thing heavier.
PROCESS:
First, we need to straighten wire (for my frames, I have cooper, but steel will be the best, Thick aluminum will do as well), and bend it on the place we desire, the easiest will be to compare the height to already existing figure and change it in accordance with character’s relative height. Remember, to bend it about 4-5 CM above desired height, as the extra wire will go under the pedestal. Then cut the other side on the same spot. Then using eyesight (at least I do) decide where the legs are going to be and bend the armature accordingly. Fasten lover torso part with duct tape
Next, you should bend one hand where you desire, then make imaginary shoulder, in comparison of proportions and bend to form another hand. Cut the wire on same spot again. Bend it to fit inside torso and fasten using duct tape.
Then you have basic frame. Now you need to wrap it up using paper rolls. For each limb, make respective roll and insert wire limbs inside. For torso, you just attach paper parts separately, using duct tape. And after all wire model is covered, use duct tape to fasten it better and make figure solid one piece.
Then you cut pedestal materials and prepare wire fasteners, as shown in the video. Using sharp edges of the armature, make holes in one of the pedestal boards and put fasteners through the board and then in the paper tube on the sculpture’s foot. After, use some paper filler material, to balance the pedestal and again, using duct tape attach all the parts together.
That’s it you have a sculpture frame. Later on you can give it extra layers of paper to spare even more clay, change arms and torso shape to give desired position to the sculpture and start sculpting!
The frame preparation will take about 1-2 hours (with extra paper on), give you rigid foundation for medium size sculptures and spare some clay as well :)
