Overclocking is a tedious matter of trial and error. It's safe and idiot proof: your PC won't even let you out of BIOS if it detects a dangerous overclock.
If Sandy, Ivy, or Haswell, start at 42 with 1.2 Vcore
If Sandy-E or Ivy-E, start at 42 with 1.35 Vcore
Once you have the OC you want, run Prime95 for 5-8 hours or Intel Burn Test for 10 runs testing 8 gigs of ram.
